The Calgary kitchen is currently one of our most asked about projects, we are still obsessed by the beautiful imagery and often dissect in detail each clever and considered design decision, that makes this such a special space. We sat down with the Senior Designer behind the kitchen, Lois Riley, to find out more about the project.
What was the brief for this project?
To design, craft and create a completely bespoke kitchen space that encapsulated the needs and wants of a young family from Canada who relocated to the UK, and were inspired by the beautiful West Coast aesthetics that they know and love. They wanted their new kitchen space to be both modern in design and functional for their busy everyday life and to meet their love of entertaining, with thoughtful areas within one space, a place to relax and enjoy. The entire kitchen space was to feel both atmospheric and unique in design whilst ultimately providing a place of real sanctuary for all those important family moments.
What were the clients key design requests? The absolute must haves!
They requested only the very best appliances, taking centre stage a beautiful Lacanche cooker and statement Gaggenhau double fridge, with the want to not only have ease of use but to weave a signature luxe style throughout. A feature wall with tall larders and a statement worktop were also high priority and they requested a simple unframed Shaker style in a beautiful natural oak finish. The clients were also set on a spacious walk-in pantry with an easily accessible, considered design and enough space for a variety of beautifully displayed items that were also super functional, and with room for extra appliances. The clients discussed a finished design that was both calming and transformative and we discussed in the brief using impactful cabinetry with clever symmetry and a wonderful mix of modern textures and organic materials to achieve this. Our colleagues and friends at Indie Interiors were the Interior Designers on this project and their work is always so inspirational and obviously central to our designs.
Why do you think the finished design works so well?
The functionality of the space is so generous, everything works so wonderfully within its own specific space, and it ensures that every use needed of the kitchen is met and exceeded. It’s not only easy to use but a joy, where design and functionality marry with complete ease. Also I do think that the beautiful statement tall natural oak cabinetry is amazing, it truly creates such an impact and was also not only a noteworthy part of the design but highly functional.
Was the open plan style easier to work with when designing a kitchen?
Open plan spaces are often easier to design because you’re not usually as limited on space, especially for an island with substantial measurements like this one. I prefer to try and hide appliances away if possible with an open plan room, so the kitchen feels more like unique ‘furniture’ rather than typical kitchen cabinetry. In this design, appliances are tucked away, still offering easy access but ultimately offering a far more pleasing aesthetic. Also although open plan design is essentially easier to work with you still need to be clever about placement, so the overall flow is seamless.
Finally we asked Lois what her top tip for designing a beautiful kitchen is?
Don’t be influenced too heavily by trends, go for something you will love now and in years to come, our Mowlem and Co. cabinetry will last the test of time so your design influences should also. Also design a layout that will last don’t get too hung up on a moment in time. Having something clever that will work for you every day, as well as for years to come, will mean you’ll always love it.
