Every project begins with a conversation, but the best ones become a genuine exchange of ideas. Knutsford is one of those projects. Conceived by Hunter & Bell Studio, it brought together a shared appreciation for architecture, craftsmanship and the belief that the most successful interiors are the ones that feel completely at ease within the homes they inhabit. Nothing is added for effect and nothing feels unnecessary. Instead, every decision contributes to a space that is both expressive and enduring.
Working closely with the studio, our role was to design, make and install the bespoke kitchen and adjoining joinery, translating an ambitious design vision into something beautifully made and deeply functional. It’s a process we’ve always valued. The strongest projects are rarely the result of one discipline alone, but of designers, makers and specialist craftspeople working together towards the same outcome.
Stepping into the finished space, it’s difficult to separate the architecture from the joinery. They feel intrinsically linked, each one enhancing the other. Rather than sitting within the room, the kitchen has become part of it. The marble naturally commands attention. Richly veined and full of movement, it wraps the island before continuing into the arched cooking area, creating a visual thread that anchors the room. It’s a bold material, yet it’s used with restraint. Instead of overwhelming the space, it introduces texture, depth and a sense of permanence, allowing the quieter materials around it to breathe.
That balance is something we returned to throughout the Knutsford project. Alongside the stone, softly painted cabinetry provides a calm backdrop, while warm timber and considered detailing bring another layer of richness without ever competing for attention. The result is a palette that feels tactile and inviting, evolving as the light changes throughout the day.
Curved forms appear again and again in this beautiful space, becoming one of the defining characteristics of the interior. The sweeping arch that frames the cooking area is echoed by the circular banquette and subtle ceiling detailing, creating a gentle rhythm that softens the home’s more architectural lines. These aren’t gestures made simply for decoration; they help shape the way the room is experienced, making it feel welcoming, comfortable and wonderfully balanced.
It’s often the details that leave the strongest impression. The precision of the cabinetry, the rhythm of the framing, the texture of the ribbed glazing and the seamless way storage has been integrated all contribute to a bespoke kitchen that feels effortlessly resolved. While many of these elements might go unnoticed at first glance, together they create a sense of quality that’s difficult to define but immediately apparent when you’re in the space.
That’s one of the privileges of designing truly bespoke furniture. Every cabinet, every junction and every proportion can be refined to suit the architecture rather than forcing the architecture to adapt to standard dimensions. The result isn’t simply a kitchen that fits; it’s one that feels as though it has always belonged there.
Of course, beautiful design only succeeds if it supports the way people live. While the room has an undeniable sense of occasion, it’s equally a place for everyday rituals. The island naturally becomes somewhere to gather, whether preparing dinner or catching up over coffee, while the integrated banquette offers a quieter corner for slower moments throughout the day. It’s these seemingly ordinary interactions that give a home its character over time.
Projects like Knutsford are always collaborative, and that’s exactly what makes them so rewarding. Hunter & Bell Studio brought a clear architectural vision, while our team focused on translating that vision into beautifully crafted furniture, resolving every detail through careful design, technical expertise and traditional craftsmanship. Alongside a talented team of specialist suppliers and makers, the result is a home where every element feels connected. Looking back, what stands out isn’t one individual feature, but the way everything works together. The architecture, the materials, the craftsmanship and the atmosphere exist in complete harmony, creating a kitchen that’s both striking and quietly timeless.
