This bespoke kitchen design forms the heart of a full home renovation in Northumberland, an interior brimming with clever design, created to celebrate creativity, collaboration, and craftsmanship. Designed and made by Mowlem and Co. the kitchen is the result of close work with a talented group of creatives and the incredible vision of our clients, resulting in a space that feels both highly personal and effortlessly functional.
From the outset, the aim was to design a kitchen that would do more than simply serve a practical purpose. Instead, it was envisioned as a central living space, one that invites conversation, creativity, and everyday use and an important reminder that high design doesn’t have to play it safe.
Texture-Led Kitchen Design.
Texture plays a defining role throughout the kitchen, bringing warmth and depth to the design. Layered cabinetry finishes, tactile materials, and contrasting surfaces work together to create a space that feels rich and considered, rather than overly polished. As senior designer Lois Riley explains: “In this kitchen, texture steals the spotlight, from surfaces you can feel to layers that tell a story, it’s what gives the space character and makes you want to stay a little longer.” This texture-led approach allows the kitchen to feel welcoming and lived-in, striking a balance between bold design and long-term comfort.
Art and Creativity at the Centre.
At the heart of the kitchen sits a bespoke island, designed as both a functional workspace and a statement piece. Wrapped in custom graffiti artwork by Ryan Roadkill, a local artist, the island introduces a strong visual identity and an unmistakable sense of place. The artwork injects energy into the space, demonstrating that contemporary kitchen design can be playful, expressive, and full of character, while still feeling modern and refined. Above the island, a sleek piece of custom joinery cleverly houses glassware and spirits, turning a practical element into a striking design feature. Every detail, from the sculptural cabinetry to this elevated display, reinforces the kitchen as a space where creativity and style are at the heart of daily life.
Hidden Storage and High-End Appliances.
While the design is expressive, functionality remains at its core. A hidden pantry is seamlessly integrated into the cabinetry, keeping storage out of sight and the main space uncluttered. The kitchen is equipped with high-end appliances, including a Sub-Zero wine cooler and an iconic AGA, ensuring professional-level performance for both everyday cooking and entertaining. Each appliance was carefully selected to complement the bespoke design while supporting modern living. Designer Nikita Malhotra reflects on this balance: “The best kitchens are the ones that reveal their character slowly. Thoughtful details, hidden functionality, and materials that age well all contribute to a space that feels warm, personal, and timeless.”
A Collaborative, Client-Led Renovation.
This project is a true reflection of our collaborative approach to bespoke kitchen and interior design. Working closely with artists, designers, and skilled makers allowed the home to evolve naturally, resulting in a kitchen that feels layered, authentic, and deeply connected to its owners.
