Behind every flawlessly finished piece is a team of skilled professionals working tirelessly in the background, the team at our workshop. These are the people who transform imaginative designs into tangible, high-quality products, combining craftsmanship, precision, and operational expertise.

While designers dream, sketch, and plan, it’s the trade team that ensures every detail comes to life exactly as intended. From the workshop floor to production oversight, logistics, and quality control, this group of experts is the backbone of Mowlem and Co. Their dedication, skill, and careful attention to detail are what turn creative visions into lasting reality.

Let’s meet just some of the talented individuals who make it all happen.

Gavin Anderson, Operations Director.

After studying accountancy and working across a range of sectors, Gavin joined Mowlem and Co. in April 2006 as the companies accountant. Over time, his role evolved from running the finance department to overseeing operations, and in 2014 Gavin became Operations Director.

Today, Gavin oversees manufacturing, finance and logistics, ensuring every part of the business runs smoothly. Notable achievements include leading a major business restructuring and managing the seamless relocation of our factory while maintaining full operations. His comprehensive understanding of the business and pragmatic approach makes him an integral part of Mowlem and Co’s continued growth and stability.

Outside work, Gavin has a passion for cooking especially outdoors with the family and is a geek at heart, enjoying strategy games, both electronic and board; all in between supporting his beloved Newcastle United as a proud season ticket holder.

Dan Battaglia, Production Supervisor.

Dan completed a First-Class Honours degree in 3D Design at Northumbria University, specialising in furniture design. His early career included exhibiting at design shows across the UK and working for an award-winning landscape architecture practice before returning to his true passion — furniture design.

He joined Mowlem and Co. over 15 years ago and has since worked across multiple departments, from CNC and specification to his current position as Production Supervisor. In this role, Dan manages the production team and oversees projects from design through to dispatch, ensuring each one meets Mowlem’s exacting standards.

Fascinated by architecture, engineering, and materials science from a young age, Dan continues to expand his knowledge in these areas. Outside of work, he enjoys cycling, running, and following Formula One, having attended several races across Europe.

Rob Johnson, Production Technician

Rob graduated from Newcastle Polytechnic in 1988 with a degree in Furniture Design and Construction. His career has taken him through a range of design and manufacturing roles, from bespoke furniture maker to project manager. After working with several industry-leading firms, Rob first joined Mowlem and Co. as a cabinetmaker before moving into pharmaceutical production — and eventually returning to Mowlem once again. 

As a Production Technician, Rob brings a wealth of hands-on experience and technical expertise to the team, helping transform creative designs into beautifully crafted pieces. Rob is a driving force in the team, known for his perfection, accuracy, and innovation as a Production Technician.

Outside of work, Rob has recently moved house, which keeps him busy with renovation projects. When he does find some free time, he enjoys getting outdoors to walk or cycle and explore the countryside. 

Colin Broatch, Production Technician.

Colin holds a 2:1 degree in Furniture and Product Design from Nottingham Trent University and has worked in interiors and kitchen design ever since graduating in 2001. He first joined Mowlem and Co. in 2013 and, after gaining further experience with other furniture and interior design firms, returned in 2022.

In his current role as Production Technician, Colin transforms creative designs into beautifully crafted furniture, producing technical drawings and cutting lists that bring each concept to life. He thrives on problem-solving, three-dimensional thinking, and attention to detail.

Colin has always been fascinated by aesthetics and imagery, passions that extend into his spare time. Colin is also an avid runner, a dedicated home cook, and a recent (though self-confessedly terrible) surfer, taking full advantage of living by the coast.

Steve Charker, Factory Foreman.

Steve Charker has been a cornerstone of Mowlem and Co. since the company began, bringing unparalleled dedication and a steadfast work ethic to every aspect of the operation. As Factory Foreman, Steve is the embodiment of discipline and organisation, ensuring that the factory runs smoothly and efficiently.

Known for his no-nonsense approach, he combines practical problem-solving with a deep understanding of production processes, earning the respect of colleagues and management alike. Steve’s commitment to excellence and his meticulous attention to detail have been instrumental in shaping the company’s high standards and continued success.

Karen Mortimer, Office Administrator.

Karen brings a wealth of experience to Mowlem and Co, having spent 23 years at the University of Bradford in a variety of roles, ultimately serving as Support Manager to the Director of Estates & Facilities. During this time, she also completed her AAT Level 4 qualification — an achievement that continues to support her work today. 

Karen joined Mowlem and Co. in February 2022, bringing her strong organisational skills, attention to detail, and a practical, hands-on approach to the office. 

Outside of work, Karen has a passion for adventure. She was the first ride coordinator for Queensbury Queens of the Mountain, an all-female, all-abilities cycling club, and enjoys walking or running with her Springer Spaniel, Tilly.  

This side of Mowlem and Co. is often less visible to clients than the design team, but it’s just as critical. These individuals are the behind-the-scenes artisans, planners, and operators who ensure that every bespoke kitchen or furniture piece is delivered not only beautifully, but reliably and to the highest standards. They are the engine that powers creativity, turning ideas into craftsmanship with consistency, skill, and care.
