There is something special about the King’s Road. With its rich design history, independent companies and ever-evolving creative community, it has long been an important part of Chelsea’s identity. It is also where Mowlem and Co. has continued to build its presence in London, bringing our approach to bespoke kitchens and interiors to private clients and industry professionals across the capital and beyond.

Earlier this year, we moved into our new Chelsea studio, just two doors down from our previous home on the King’s Road. While the move was only a short distance, it gave us the opportunity to rethink the space and how we use it, creating a more considered environment for the conversations, creative thinking and detailed design work at the heart of every Mowlem and Co. project.

A Studio Designed Around the Process.

We wanted the new studio to feel like a natural extension of the way we work. Rather than a traditional showroom, it has been designed as a working studio: somewhere to meet our clients, explore ideas and work through the many decisions that shape a bespoke interior.

For Rudi Luder, Director at Mowlem and Co. the move was an opportunity to create a space that better reflects the way the team works with clients. “Staying on King’s Road was important to us. We wanted to create a studio that feels connected to Chelsea’s design community, while giving our team a more considered space in which to meet clients, share ideas and develop projects. It’s a natural evolution for Mowlem and Co., retaining what matters to us while creating a setting that reflects how we work today.”

Designing a bespoke kitchen is a collaborative process, and the early conversations are often where the most important ideas begin to take shape. Having a space that encourages this exchange, while allowing clients to experience our cabinetry, materials and finishes in person, is an important part of that journey.

Materials, Detail and the Art of Bespoke Design.

A significant part of the design process is understanding how materials work together. Colour, texture, proportion and finish all influence the character of a space, and these decisions are best made when they can be considered in context. Our studio offers the opportunity to spend time exploring these elements, from cabinetry finishes and timber details to worktop materials, handles and the finer touches that bring a scheme together. Seeing and feeling these finishes first-hand can make a real difference, helping to establish how a particular combination will work within the wider architecture of a home.

For Emma Wiseman, Senior Designer in Chelsea, this is an important part of helping clients find the right direction for their project. “So much of the design process comes down to the details and how everything works together. Being able to sit with clients, look at materials alongside one another and talk through the possibilities makes a real difference. It allows us to understand what they are drawn to and develop a scheme that feels considered, personal and right for their home.”

At Mowlem and Co. every project begins with the individual. We do not work to a fixed formula or expect clients to fit their ideas around a predetermined design. Instead, our designers consider the architecture of the property, the way each room will be used and the details that matter most to the people who live there. The studio supports that approach, providing a place to explore possibilities, refine ideas and consider the finer details until everything feels right for the space.

A Place for Conversation.

At the centre of the new studio is our London team. Their experience, knowledge of materials and understanding of how a kitchen needs to function are integral to the design process. A first meeting is an opportunity to get to know one another, discuss the project and begin to establish a direction. Some clients arrive with a clear idea of what they want; others are still working through the possibilities. Both are equally welcome.

These early discussions allow our designers to understand not only the practical requirements of a project, but also the atmosphere a client hopes to create. How the kitchen connects to adjoining rooms, how the family gathers, how they cook and entertain, and how the space needs to adapt throughout the day all inform the decisions that follow. It is this balance of thoughtful design and practical understanding that allows each Mowlem and Co. interior to feel individual, rather than simply beautiful in isolation.

A New Chapter in Chelsea.

Chelsea has long been an important part of London’s design landscape, bringing together established names, independent studios and a community with a shared appreciation for considered interiors. For Mowlem and Co. remaining on King’s Road allows us to continue being part of that conversation.

Our work often involves collaboration with architects, interior designers and other specialists, and being part of a neighbourhood with such a strong design community creates opportunities to share ideas and build lasting relationships. It is a side of the business we value, alongside the relationships we develop with our clients throughout the design process. As we settle into the studio, we look forward to welcoming clients, collaborators and friends of Mowlem and Co. to spend time with us, explore materials and discuss ideas for their homes.

Every bespoke project begins with an idea. Whether you’re reimagining your kitchen, considering bespoke joinery or planning a more extensive renovation, our Chelsea team would welcome the opportunity to hear about your plans.
